A romantic trip to Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu
Day 1: Enjoy the road trip from Chennai to Mahabalipuram
As a couple You Tuber and travel Vlogger, we went to Mahabalipuram towards the end of September. We stayed at the beautiful Chariot Beach Resorts. We flew out from Kolkata in a morning flight and landed comfortably at Chennai after 2.5 hours. The moment we landed at the airport, the Resort welcomed us there with some cold drinks and juices. An incredible gesture!

Mahabalipuram is located about 55 kms from Chennai that makes it an easy weekend destination for Chennaites and even for people near Chennai such as Bangalore. No hang on! You can in fact land at Chennai and book your self driven car and hit the road straight to Mahabalipuram. Our journey from Chennai airport was epic. We surpassed the chaotic, crowded streets of Chennai and the moment we took off to the NH 32 Road, it was spectacular. The entire stretch was stunning and we didn’t have to stop anywhere in between. We drove past the beautiful coastline soaking in its earthy smell and local sights.

A 40 acre property, it is tucked away near the Five Rathas temple overlooking the stunning beach of the city. Our welcome at Chariot Beach Resort was a ceremony in itself after which we huddled in a buggy towards our Deluxe cottage no. 325. It was barely a 5 minutes walk from the beach. Our excitement was quite palpable.
The room inside the deluxe cottage was really spacious. There are two large sized beds that could easily accommodate 4 adults and 1 or 2 kids. The interior décor of the room was minimalistic yet classy. It has two large windows which were perfect for that early morning tea or coffee sipping experience. What was more exciting was that the cottage has a bathroom with an open roof. The view of the trees and branches with the chirping of the birds were exhilarating.
Our weekend trip to Chariot Beach Resort was beautifully interspersed with day long activities at the resort – not to forget its awesome and delicious array of breakfast, lunch and dinner (we are coming to it later on) – and exploring and immersing ourselves at the history of this ancient heritage town. This included a visit to the gorgeous Shore Temple, Five Rathas Temple, Caves, Arjuna’s Penance and Lighthouse.
Activities at Chariot Beach Resort
If you are coming with a family and friends, chances are you are lucky to be in this resort. There are ample light or moderate adventure activities inside the resort with trained staffs to guide you. There’s ropeway, volley ball court and a large ground to play cricket as well. For kids, there is never going to be a dull moment. For couples, who would want to spend some quite intimate time, you can take a plunge into the resort’s huge swimming pool.
The evening was usually a lazy, unwinding passing of time on our first day. We could see lots of enthusiastic holiday goers taking a dip into the pool while we quietly walked passed it towards the beach. The sunset was mesmerizing to say the least. But we have heard that the sunrise at this resort was spectacular. We were quite excited about that experience.
After a fulfilling and heavy meal at night, we went off to sleep so that we could wake up early at around 5.30 am to catch a glimpse of the sun. The resort also organizes water front activities such as catamaran rides.
Day 2: Time to splurge with an exotic spa treatment at Chariot Ayurveda Centre
We woke up at around 6 am and headed straight to the beach. After waiting for sometime, the sunburst appeared in the horizon splashing all shades of hues to soothe our nerves. We had quietly set up our camera gears to shoot the splendid sunrise with few time lapse videos as well. After the morning jig, it was time for a proper south Indian breakfast.
The restaurant was one of the largest I have been to. It overlooks the stunning swimming pool and you could see the beach in the horizon. The resort also has a sea front beach serving amazing sea food delicacies which we had during the night. However, the breakfast was amply delightful. After the breakfast we had the rest of the day for ourselves and we decided to splurge ourselves with an exotic spa treatment at Chariot Ayurveda Spa centre.
The spa centre left us speechless with its location. The Spa centre was perched on the beach and each room had a massive sea viewing window. You could wish to remove the curtains and watch the sea waves crushing against the beach while you take the massage. We did the same. While I moved to one room with a male masseur, Mousumi hustled into another room with a female masseur. She was suggested the Shirodhara Spa treatment.
After an hour long exhilarating spa therapy, we took a shower (that was attached to the massage room).
The Resort designed some Karaoke activities for us and other invitees with mind blowing sea food at the sea food restaurant. It was time to let the hair loose and go wild and dance with some amazing music and cocktails.
Day 3: Divine Destination – A Tour of the temples of Mahabalipuram
It was kept for a day tour to the temples of the ancient town. We visited early in the day to the Shore Temple, Arjuna’s Penance and Five Rathas temples. We walked from the resort through the beach to reach the Shore Temple. It took us about 20 mins of walk to reach the temple. You can also opt for a vehicle from the reception of the resort. A guide narrated the entire history of the temple to us. The Shore Temple is a popular tourist hotspot and it is not rare to find hordes of tourists and selfie hungry youths happily clicking away their photos.
I would say Shore Temple is one of your perfect Instagram worthy monument. Ideally, visiting it during the early sunrise or sunset hours would give you the perfect shot. From the Shore Temple, we did rounds of Arjuna’s Penance and Five Rathas Temple. You could also visit the Mahabalipuram Light house if you want (we skipped it though).
The Arjuna’s Penance will take you back to the era of Mahabharata. It’s a divine sensation and gives you goosegumps. The intricate carvings on the stone are a sight to behold. The experience was spectacular.
Finally, it was time to bid adieu to a perfect romantic trip to Chariot Beach Resort in Mahabalipuram. You can club the trip to Mahabalipuram with a visit to Pondicherry as well which is about 200 kms from this heritage town.
However, an ideal trip itinerary for your romantic vacation at Mahabalipuram combined with Chennai and Puducherry would include the following:
